The novel, From Despair… is a humorous, inspirational, poignant, and controversial treatment of the issue of divorce, especially how it is addressed in evangelical circles. Many will find comfort and strength from this book. Some will be outraged.
The central character is a man locked in desperation. His marriage is in a state of collapse and he seeks consolation through his infatuation with an intriguing woman, in attempted bonding experiences with his friends, and most of all, through the “church.” When his marriage ends in divorce, a divorce that he and his wife both find necessary, those he counts on the most for support are the ones who abandon and even castigate him for his decision. Worst of all, his “church family” ostracizes him. His desperation becomes worse as he finds himself living in a run-down apartment complex and he has an attorney who sells him out in court. His frustration with the “fix up” and the dating scene become obvious as the story unfolds.
At our character’s lowest, he looks up. Through God’s help, he is reintroduced to a friend from the past who eventually becomes his wife. He also meets a stranger who proves to be a genuine man of God. He is a man who understands God’s grace and love as opposed to those who live a pretense of compassion.
The portrait of “the church” will be humorous to some, encouraging to many, and offensive to others. But the reality of divorce and the church will be personal to many. If no one, save those who have experienced divorce, understands what is written in this book, they will.

My first thoughts when reading the summary of From Despair... by David Berresford was that I never went through a divorce, so the book probably wouldn't apply to me. How wrong I was! After the first couple chapters I couldn't stop reading! Although the theme of the story is about divorce, there is so much more to it. First, he presents a balanced view of divorce - the reality that it happens for different reasons but it's still wrong. He shows where couples fail as husband and wife, and also where the church fails in various points. As Christians, we are to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). Mr. Berresford shows where the Modern American Evangelical church (as a whole, not every local church and not every Christian) has failed in that area in recent times, attending to carnal desires of church and community members, all under the umbrella of being ‘relevant.’ There is also the flip-side, and he shows where law without God's grace through the work of Christ is damaging to the church and individuals.
Reading this book, whether one has experienced a divorce or not, will hopefully cause the reader to stop and ponder his/her role in the local church body. Are we worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24), or are we worshipping in strong emotion and entertainment? Are we helping others to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ, or are we looking forward to the next social event where we can grow in the knowledge of what other people are doing and saying?

From Despair edition by David Berresford Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Wonderful book and makes one think how would my church treat me in the case of a divorce? David has painted a clear picture of a Christian who is all alone after his divorce. Only God is still with him - and always provides the answer if we ask! Mike Fisher
I really enjoyed David's writing style, and his ability to reach out to the disenfranchised with hope. Hope in finding a church home.
One of the best books I've ever read. You are quickly drawn in by the author, and he doesn't let you go until the very last period.
A difficult subject to tackle, but impressively done! It's a message many people need to hear. Very nice job Mr. BERRESFORD.
I want to recommend this book. I could not put it down. David writes this book as if he is a storyteller sitting with you at your kitchen table telling you a wonderful tale. As a Christian and a preacher I have met every person in this book. Happily I saw myself as some of the good people but, sadly, I saw myself as some of the not so good people. This book has made me realize that I need to be the person Jesus wants me to be. Thank you David for bringing to light a topic that is all too often left in the dark.
