You're never too old to make a bad decision.

After twenty winters on the road, Tanyth Fairport makes one last pilgrimage in her quest to learn all she can about the herbs and medicinal plants of Korlay before settling down to write her magnum opus. Her journey is interrupted when she decides to help a small village and learns that much of what she knows of the world may not be quite as it seems.

Nathan Lowell blends wiccan tradition and shamanistic lore into a fantasy quest for a new - if unlikely - heroine. She learns that the familiar sometimes hides the fantastic and that, even when you think you’ve made your decisions, life doesn’t always agree.

Ravenwood Tanyth Fairport Adventures Book 1 eBook Nathan Lowell

The author, known previously for writing science fiction, has not only dived into fantasy, but has written a fantasy that turns a lot of tropes on their heads. Instead of a young, adventurous, male protagonist, and a high-conflict tale, he's given us Tanyth Fairport, a woman of mature years, limited means, and the modest goal of traveling cross-country to learn from a renown healer. Her travels are interrupted when a newly formed community along her way needs her help. It’s a novel mostly about good people doing good things - I say mostly because books need antagonists, right? And the band of men menacing the community fills that role - but much of the book explores the gentle rhythms of life in the village. If you're looking for a comfort-read that explores community and interrelationships, check it out.

Ravenwood Tanyth Fairport Adventures Book 1 eBook Nathan Lowell Reviews

A nice read, especially as a free download. Overall it presented as a Wiccan variant on perhaps Eastwood's "Pale Rider", albeit with a far more benevolent protagonist.

As other reviewers have noted, there are cultural disconnects between the villagers' origins compared to their current circumstances and behaviors that caused, for me at least, serious suspension of disbelief issues.

Other quibbles the stew was always "rich", the bread always steaming and fragrant. This celebration of homespun goodness became very cloying very fast.

I would read the next Tanyth Fairport Adventure.
An outstanding and unique story. When I came to the end, I was so glad to see there were more books. An older heroine, written so deftly by a male author that he must have had a past life as an older woman. A fantasy with only the slightest touch of magic, but with a great deal of an ordinary, hardworking life. A story that shows the value of kindness and determination. A quietly, excellent book.
It is very rare for me to give a 5-star rating to the first book I've read by an author I'm not familiar with on a first reading. This one definitely made a 5-star for me.

As far as I know, this is the author's first fantasy. It fits exactly into what I think of as a 'comfort read' and it's gone directly from a first read to my 'keep to re-read' list.

Real, ordinary people (though they are dealing with magic, of course), an interesting story to tell with a certain amount of mayhem and suitably nasty bad guys to defeat. Has very few stereotypes and a wonderfully mature main character rather than the stereotypical young, beautiful witch who enchants everyone in her path.

This is a sensible older healer who settles in a small village for the winter and stomps around muttering to herself when the raven starts talking to her ... been there, done that (well, talking to myself, can't say that I've had conversations with ravens). Instead of a sword, she wields a wicked walking staff.

Just hope this is a series, even though it will do damage to my book budget.
Nathan Lowell once again delivers top quality story-telling with his own unique touch in this wonderfully entertaining tale. His world-building touch is deft in this first book of the Tanyth Fairport adventures--no long, rambling history lessons, just the right amount of scene-setting to whet the appetite for more. As always in Lowell's books, the characters immediately draw the reader into their world; Tanyth and the villagers quickly seem like friends and neighbors and the bad guys are a believable blend of menace and denseness. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next Tanyth Fairport adventure.
I also recommend Lowell's other books in the science fiction genre Quartershare is the first in a wonderful series and is available in both paper and kindle formats.
You're never too old to make a bad decision, or maybe correct one? Tanyth makes one last journey in her quest to learn all she can about the herbs and medicinal plants of Korlay. She has been wandering and traveling for twenty years after escaping an abusive marriage. Her journey is interrupted when she stops to help a small village and learns that the world may not be quite as it seems, and this village needs her help. They didn't ask for her help, and she is not usually the hero type at all, but she has some skills to offer, and this village seems to be calling out to her.

Nathan Lowell blends an form of Wicca-like tradition and shaman-styled folklore into a quest the resides in a fantastical time period filled with its own mysteries and magic. To top it all off, the main savior of the quest is an aged female with zero military skills. Nathan Lowell creates a world for this unlikely heroine to explore. Tanyth learns that even when you think you've made your decisions, life doesn't always agree that you are done, and often presents other lessons to be learned. Tanyth also learns that you are never to old to exit bad decisions, and that you are never to old to make other decisions that leave you wondering if they were the right ones to make.

This is an author I have enjoyed for years. If you are familiar with the novels he completed prior to this one, you can appreciate, as I do, that he is a skilled writer and story teller. This novel was very different than the others before it, but just as enjoyable and enthralling. I appreciated the absence of vulgarity and graphic adult scene descriptions, which also shows that his an amazing writer and doesn't need to include that type of content to sell a book or a story to the reader. (Don't get me wrong, the adult scenes don't usually frighten me away, but they are often used to draw an audience to a story that can often be missing a strong plot.)

Lowell's style of writing is calm, soothing, and gentle. It is almost melodic. If you like older, female lead characters, or stories with nature-based religions, and mystical ideas regarding nature and our place in it, you'll like this story. Keep in mind also, that my husband likes none of these things typically, and he liked this story anyway, so I really would recommend this anyone and everyone.
