The trouble with ghost story anthologies (or zombie anthologies or vampires collections) is that the reader knows what's coming, and for a genre that thrives on the unknown that can be deadly (if you'll pardon the pun).

That said, the Dark Hall Press Ghost Anthology is a fun read that offers some good writing, moments of real emotion, and a few surprises. Highlights include:

"Two, Close Keeping" by Gordon Clemmons, is a bittersweet tale that eschews lengthy explanations in favor of creating a sense of wonder and sorrow. Resisting the temptation to have his 1st person narrator indulge in unrealistic exposition, Clemmons focuses on what is happening. And what is happening is sad and disturbing and beautiful. The story is open to various interpretations and invites multiple readings.

"Again and Again" by Morgan Crooks, perhaps the most unusual story, concerns a secret occult organization and an operative caught between obligations. It offers a glimpse of a wide and detailed world and I would not be surprised to see a novel or game by Mr. Crooks in the future set in the same universe. The writing is tense and moves easily between spy thriller and urban fantasy.

"The Stillness" by Marie Robinson is a more traditional ghost story, but one told with a certain timelessness and simplicity that is very evocative. Again, no answers are offered but only a haunting glimpse of a dark and dangerous corner of the world.

"Silver Darlings" by Margret Whitttock creates a wonderful sense of place (the lonely northern most coast of Britain) and offers realistic characters caught up in ancient forces they cannot understand.

The Dark Hall Press Ghost Anthology offers a nice selection of traditional and non-traditional ghost stories. Imaginative and evocative, this collection makes haunting Autumn reading.

Dark Hall Press Ghost Anthology Various Authors 9780615884387 Books Reviews

This was a well-written, supremely entertaining collection. Some terrific stories are to be had here. I enjoyed this quite a bit, and only wish it had been a little longer. Well done.
Cool anthology. Check it out for sure, especially if you enjoy not only ghostly supernatural spirits, but stories that lead you to realms unexplored. I especially enjoyed Again and Again written by Morgan Crooks, and found myself reading it over again(!) a mere fifteen minutes or so after reading the last line (I spent the fifteen minutes contemplating the complexities of the story's reality, then needed to dive back in to spend more time there). Crooks has a knack for writing dialogue, allowing what his characters say and how they say it to skillfully thread fibers of the story's many layers together. And he isn't alone. This book contains some wonderful examples of storytelling as art. Read and enjoy them.
